Christian convert and former law student Ghazal Marzban Jourshari, has been sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison on charges of “propaganda against the state” and “assembly and collusion with the intent to disrupt national security”.
 
The sentence was recently issued by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court and communicated to Ghazal inside prison according to Hengaw Organisation for Human Rights. She has been detained at Evin Prison since her arrest in January 15, 2026, after Iranian security forces raided her home in Tehran.
 
Over the years Ghazal has repeatedly faced pressure, arrest and prosecution because of her conversion to Catholic Christianity and her religious activities. She was previously detained in November 2024 and later sentenced by the same court branch to imprisonment and 74 lashes on charges including “failure to observe mandatory hijab” and “propaganda against the state”. During that arrest Ghazal sustained serious rib injuries as a result of violence used by security forces. 
 
According to Hengaw, it has been reported that Ghazal and her husband have for years faced systematic restrictions and obstruction by state institutions because of their religious beliefs and conversion to Christianity. The pressure extended to difficulties obtaining essential medication for her husband’s Parkinson’s disease.
