Qin Defu was arrested in December 2018 in the middle of a mass crackdown on Early Rain Covenant Church, charged with “illegal business operations”. He was secretly tried in November 2019, and sentenced to four years in prison.
Qin Defu is an elder of Early Rain Church. He is originally from Sichuan Province. Qin started his own business after dropping out of school. He also used to attend the government-sanctioned Three Self Church with his father. In 2014 he settled in Chengdu with his wife and they both became members of Early Rain Church. When God called Qin to full-time ministry with Early Rain in 2017, he closed his general store and became a deacon, where he worked closely with Pastor Wang Yi to manage church activities. Police had placed him on a wanted list, and labelled him as the “backbone” of Early Rain Church.
In his final statement, Qin said, “I am a Christian who served in the church and served others according to the needs of the church. As an ordinary citizen, I did not do anything against the law or regulations. Faith is not a crime.”
